Alimony can be a periodic receipt, a one-time receipt or a or a combination of both. The Income Tax Act, 1961 does not have it specifically covered in ‘income’ moreover there is no specific provision that governs its taxability. However, if alimony is paid on a monthly basis, it is treated as a revenue receipt and in certain countries, it is deducted as tax.
